Pulling tractors for charity

Seven Harper Adams Adventure Recreation students raised around £500 for an agricultural charity by organising a fund-raising tractor pull.

The event coincided with the annual Charity 10s rugby matches and was an assignment for the Events Management module on their course at the University College.

Second year student, Tom Rouse, said: “We were given different tasks to achieve, for example, some of us organised getting the tractor companies involved while others prepared the BBQ and refreshments.

“All of the money raised from the weekend is being donated to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI), which we believe to be a worthy cause.

“We’d like to thank Ravenhill Limited and Rea Valley who provided the John Deere and New Holland tractors and assisted on the day.”

The pull involved teams of five to six people competing against each other to pull equally weighted tractors over a set distance as quickly as possible.

The students were also expected to consider all aspects of health and safety and conduct risk assessments to ensure the event ran smoothly.

Manda Love, who is also a second year student added: “It’s been really successful and we deliberately chose to coincide with the Charity 10s weekend because we knew there would be a lot of spectators. It’s been a great experience.”
